When I (Michael) first started coaching, I didn’t have the confidence that I do now. So, my coaching style is very, very different to what it was back then. I was more preoccupied with trying to make the parents happy so that I would get paid by giving out tons and tons of information.
When I look back, I was actually jeopardizing the player’s progression because it was just information overload. I now understand why a lot of the kids used to get confused because I was coaching more to keeps the parents happy rather than picking out what’s really important and focus on that. Even if that be 1–2 points per hour, if I’m doing an hour lesson and just work on those things, I now have the confidence to analyze and to pick what’s important and prioritize that. Back then, when I first started coaching, it was just too much information overload.
