I’m not afraid to lose my job. That’s because I know that I’m replaceable. Everybody within our industry is. If you’re afraid to lose your job, they will sense that they will feel it. The only way that I might not go to direct in my communication is because I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings. Sometimes you need to be very aware of those feelings. As a coach you need to learn about the personal needs that the player has. Sometimes you need to have an indirect approach.

If the player breaks some of my principles, I will be very firm on that. You must show where your boundaries are. You must also communicate that if they cross the boundaries, that there will be a warning and they have to uphold a certain skill set of discipline.

Where room needs to be for people to have an indirect approach, you need to sometimes take that time and it may take a little bit longer, but your honesty will always be your biggest asset as a coach.
