You want to create great foundation for everything because you’re not really 100 percent sure how somebody is going to evolve. You don’t know how tall they’re going to be, how fast they’re going to be. You can have a good idea. But you don’t want to pigeonhole, somebody at a young age. So, you develop a really great sound foundation.

At 11–12 you start to see the players on court personality emerge. Somebody might be an aggressive risk taker, that just love to play aggressive and ripping the ball. Others, you have a personality of being quite passive or they like to respond to what they see.

The on-court personality is not always consistent with the way they are off the court

You take somebody like Federer off the court. He’s a very mild mannered, calm guy. On the court, he’s pretty darn aggressive.

The old days when Stefan Edberg was playing. He is the mildest guy you ever want to speak to off the court, but on the court, he’s attacking the net on every ball.

So, everyone has their on-court personality. You want to build a game around that because you always want the player playing the way they love. It doesn’t mean you don’t teach them all the skills to play the different aspects of the game, but if they’re an aggressive on court personality, you want to make sure that they can take the ball early, pound a lot of first strike skills, etc.
