Decision making has to be a key part of training sessions otherwise tennis players will have no clue what to do in matches.
Way to often I have made the mistake of setting up either basket or live ball drills where I have chosen exactly what shots players should hit. Then they did the drill & even though we evaluated it afterwards they had no clue why they had to play the pattern that I asked of them & they certainly didn’t improve their decision making skills.
1) Set up messy game situations
2) Let the players find ways of solving the puzzle
3) Structure their reflection so you ensure that learning has taken place
